How to spot mealybugs fast
Mealybugs look like tiny white cotton balls. They hide in:
- Leaf joints
- Stem creases
- Undersides of leaves
- Near the soil line
Big clue: sticky residue on leaves or surfaces below the plant.
Treatment plan
Step 1: Manual removal (works surprisingly well)
- Dip a cotton swab in 70% isopropyl alcohol.
- Dab each mealybug directly.
- Wipe away the residue.
Step 2: Repeat checks
Mealybugs come back if you miss hidden areas.
- Re-check every 2 to 3 days for two weeks.
- Treat any new spots immediately.
Step 3: Heavy infestations
If it is everywhere:
- Prune what you can
- Use insecticidal soap on the entire plant
- Consider repotting if root mealybugs are suspected
Root mealybugs (the hidden problem)
If the plant keeps declining with no visible bugs, check roots for:
- White fuzz
- Waxy residue
This usually needs repotting and cleaning the roots.
Prevention
- Quarantine new plants
- Inspect stems and joints weekly
- Avoid overcrowding plants
